| ![]() What does Sailor Pluto's skin tone mean? This is a question I think nearly every Sailor Moon fan has asked themselves at one time or another. Pretty much all of the characters appear to have similar skin tone, making them appear as average Japanese people but Pluto is obviously darker. Strangely it never appears to come up at all in the manga, anime or musicals.
The first, and most popular fan theory is that Sailor Pluto is from Greek heritage. It's stated several times that her father is Chronos, one of the Greek gods from the ancient world. The Silver Millenium also appears to be set around the time of the Greek gods (though this has not been confirmed) with the architecture seen in Endymion's kingdom on Earth which also supports this theory. Another idea is that Sailor Pluto is indeed Japanese like the other Sailors but of a racial minority. Despite what the nationalistic right wingers will tell you, Japan is not a homogenous society. There are several racial minorities in Japan such as the Okinawans and Ainu and even among the "main" Japanese population there is quite a bit of genetic diversity. The third theory is that Pluto simply has a sun tan which is entirely possible though probably the least likely of the theories. Again, there is no official answer on the issue. Personally I'm inclined to believe that her skin tone is due to her (suggested) Greek heritage.
