Re-Design Contest for my Sailor Mau

For many years, I've had my version of Sailor Mau be completely and totally different. She was, in senshi form, an anthromorph tiger/human with no clothes (with my line of thinking being "Who in their right mind would put clothes on a being that's covered with fur from eartip to feet/claw tips?"). But now, I'm thinking that that form of her could be her "I'm from Mau and I'm its senshi, but I'm not in senshi form" form (with the full capabilities to easily shift/morph/change to fully human or fully tiger form at will). Problem is, after making Sailor Savior, I'm all out of ideas to make a new fuku for Sailor Mau (which is why it'll take me a while to come up with a new dragon based senshi that Lei-san got me thinking about making).

Your mission should you choose to accept it, create a new fuku for Sailor Mau but to keep her eye color the same (brown or bronze/tawny brown) and her hair color (jet black) & style thesame as either her human (Abenti Galger) style (depending on the artist it's either in circular-more-frequently-used-bun or rounded-triangle-so-far-used-by-one-artist bun form) or her (soon to be non-senshi) Mau style. Examples of both below. Fuku can be almost anything but please, if you're gonna somewhat base it off of Sailor Tin Nyanko, no excess jingly bells or pleather (some is fine but please don't go as overboard as Tin Nyanko's was)...otherwise, the sky's the limit.

B&W Abenti: Example or Example

Due Date: Depending on the responce I get will a final due date be announced but for now I'd say at least until the end of September to give roughly a month to do something.

Prizes: This will also vary depending on the responce I get...most likely will be edits (especially since I don't have a scanner/digital camera that works with my computer).

Sailor Moon [PGSM] Picture Books!

Welcome yet again to another installment! I'm sorry it's taken me far longer than usual. Unfortunately, summer has already come to an end for me and mine, and so, I'm going to have to get this a bit more organized. So, instead of once a week, I'm likely going to do one every 2 weeks. Apologies again! But this gives me then plenty of time to gather up information, a good quality description, and enough time to get it down for you all.
This week, we're going to look at the PGSM picture books, and make a comparison of the two! So let's get started, shall we?

What they Look Like: First, we'll look at the Kodansha Books. With the Kodansha books, we have a beautifully designed cover, with the wonderful "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon" logo, complete with the picture that Naoko so wonderfully drew for PGSM! Each book is numbered with an adorable heart and number inside of it. The back of the book has more pictures, and of course, pictures of previous books, and books up and coming! Again, with beautiful pictures littered on the back, and their information as well.
With the Shogakukan books, we see a slightly different approach. With a simplistic design for the cover, and the typical "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon" logo on it. Each book is of course numbered appropriately, but this time the number is atop a moon and star picture. The backs of the books have adorable pictures, though very plainly made. Of course, the basic information is back there as well.

Comparing the INSIDE: Now, looking at the INSIDE of these BOARD books, we see that the Kodansha books pictures are much more crisp in color and clarity than the Shogakukan. The Kodansha books seem to have used specific poses for the book, rather than using pictures seen on cards, and other places to litter in the book. The shogakukan books also seem to have their images giving a posterized feel. Which, though doesn't take away from the beauty of the images, it does leave one feeling a bit more partial to Kodansha's versions.
Kodansha also seems to have a bit of creativity in their appearance with the books. Leaving many pictures and even screen caps from the show inside! Though, the Shogakukan also has screen caps, they aren't as nice as the Kodansha versions. And certainly are without any neat little effects to really accent and surround them. Instead, we find that Shogakukan uses a filmstrip like approach fairly commonly in their books.

Who they're for: Finally, these books are MEANT for children. The insides of the books are written in fairly easy to understand Japanese for the beginner. Which suggests these books were meant for small children. Along with the inclusion that these are in fact board books, confirms that idea. So what you have inside of the book next to the pictures is a VERY brief description of what's going on, or who someone is.

How many in a set: As far as how MANY there are in these sets? For Shogakukan, you're going to expect a total of 6 books, with NO special act. With Kodansha, you're going to expect 6 books WITH the special act. Please keep in mind, though they are equal in how many, this does NOT mean they are copies of eachother! The pictures are VERY different, and instead of wrapping the season up in 5 books with Kodansha, Shogakukan decides to wrap it in 6. Giving a bit more knowledge into it.

What they COST: Looking at the back of the book, we see that these books went around 400 Yen. Which is ROUGHLY $4.00 (minus some change) for those in the states. However, don't expect to get these books for that price anywhere else. These books have been out of print for a while now, which makes them a growing rare. However, You can find these books on Ebay for anywhere from $1.00 to $10.00 each! So it's nothing to flock over. Generally speaking, expect to spend about $5.00 to $8.00 USD per book, unless you can get lucky.

All in all, they are wonderful sets. If you're looking for different pictures, go with Kodansha. Their pictures seem to be a bit more exclusive. The descriptions are clear, and the pictures are crisp. Though it does wrap it up 1 book quicker than Shogakukan, it certainly doesn't take away from anything. And with a book on the special act, you can't go wrong! This is not to say Shogakukan is out of the picture either though! Their pictures are adorable, yet common, and the descriptions are well done as to what's going on. Though it isn't as 'flashy' as Kodansha, it still has it's charm. It's not something that's totally necessary for the Sailor Moon, or PGSM collector, but it makes for some interesting memories. You definitely wouldn't be sorry if you bought these books, but I wouldn't go absolutely nuts over them either. A nice collectable, and at the very least, an interesting addition to one's collection. Over all, Kodansha books get a 10 out of 10 for their books, and Shogakukan gets an 7 out of 10.

Next time, we'll look at some more neat Sailor Moon items (I'm not sure which at this point! ^_^)!!
See you then!

Sailor Moon Stars Food Items

Ack! Has it really been a month? Time sure flies when you're on vacation! Sorry for the delay everyone, life's hectic and I'm no exception! But enough about me, you want to hear about another toy from my bin, right? Sure hope so!
This week we're going to look at the forgotten toys from the Stars Series. The Sailor Stars FOOD items. Which, also included a nifty cash register, if anyone's interested..

What it looks like: Well, aside from the typical pink packaging in a gashapon sized box, we actually get to see Usagi and the Starlights in DIFFERENT attire!!! We have the all popular Seiya dressed as a master chef, and Taiki and Yaten as what would appear to be waiters, and finally, our beloved Usagi as an adorable waitress, armed with a dish of food in hand (isn't that dangerous for Usagi?! Especially with a SUNDAE on the platter!). Of course, on the front, we also have the official BANDAI logo, the "Sailor Stars" logo, as well as a nifty picture of all the items offered in this series.
Each side of the box, as 2-3 "menu" items. #1 being a scoop of ice cream, complete with stickers on top, and an ice cream scooper (dish included), #2 being a fried egg with pan and spatula, #3 being (my best guess) Flan or Jello, complete with a flag to stick at the top of it (usagi's face on it), stickers, plate to put it on, and molded top, #4 being an apple that has been cut in half, that sticks together with velcro, a knife, and a plate (so you can cut it in half for all your friends!), and finally #5 is a piece of cake, once again, giving that same appearance as the apple, to be cut in half, complete with plate and knife.
Our back of the box, consists of the usual information (choking hazard), along with other items you might want to collect, to make your own restaurant. A scanner with what appears to be a menu, some kind of ordering calculator, a cash register, and a portable phone. Of course, lovely Usagi is modeling herself with a phone in hand, and that plate of a burger and coffee in the other. And the top of the box you ask? Of course has Usagi once more, smiling merrily for everyone. The number of the item is clearly seen at the top, along with a basic label.

What does it do: Aside from give you hours of total fun? Nothing. There really isn't anything spectacular about this set. It's your basic average food set, that you'd find in a dollar store, or maybe even your local Wal*Mart for kids to play with. And at 200 Yen (which is roughly a bit less than $2.00) each set, you're better off buying those! The set's are pretty flimsy, and everything seems to come apart really easily. The velcro on the apple for example, is VERY small, and surely doesn't keep it together long. Along with this, the stickers and velcro seem to come off in time (which is likely a gimmie). The food is nice enough to be small to fit into a gashapon sized box (somewhat on the large side), but aside from just being adorable, I truly fail to see how any of this relates to the Stars Season.

Overall this really isn't anything spectacular. The idea that this came from Bandai floors me, as typically this company likes to come out with items relatively insync with what's going on in the show (I could see this going well with the Tokyo Mew Mew crowd). The items are pretty simple, and there's nothing really entertaining about them (unless you enjoy playing pretend?). As far as being a collectable? It's probably on the LOW end of the totem pole. Most try and collect items that can be easily recognized as "Sailor Moon" items. Where as, if the items were out of the box, one wouldn't even KNOW these came from Sailor Moon.
My daughter and I give this a 3 out of 10. My lowest rating EVER. If you're looking to collect items that are slightly on the rare side, this is likely for you. I've personally only seen this item maybe twice in all the time I've been collecting. I wouldn't buy this item without the box however, and in somewhat mint condition. It's really a waste otherwise. If you enjoy collecting the Sailor Moon Stars (and other season) items that have nothing to do with the show, then this is just the cream of the crop for you! (As I see the register on ebay all the time) It's a cute little addition to any collection, but definitely not a must right now. Again, it IS a rare item (rare meaning, hard to find..) there's no doubt about that. But certainly not worth more than $5.00 a set ($25 at most for all 5) in MINT condition.

Next week, we're going to take a look at some more Sailor Moon items. This time we're going to look at the PGSM Shogakukan books VS. the Kodansha books.
Thanks again!
